What Your Cat Is Really Trying to Tell You
Cats may not speak our language, but they are constantly communicating. From the flick of a tail to the slow blink of an eye, your cat’s body language can tell you exactly how they’re feeling – if you know what to look for.
At Happy Tails, we’ve learned a lot about feline communication by living with our two cats, Freddie and Penny. They may be siblings, but their body language (and personalities!) can be very different – which makes them perfect examples.

Why Cat Body Language Matters
Cats rely heavily on body language to express emotions like happiness, fear, stress, and affection. Unlike dogs, they’re subtle communicators – so small changes in posture or movement can mean a lot.
By learning these signals, you can:
- Recognise stress or anxiety early
- Avoid accidental scratches or bites
- Respond better to your cat’s needs
- Build deeper trust and connection
Understanding Your Cat’s Tail
A cat’s tail is one of the clearest indicators of mood.
🐾 Tail held high
This usually means your cat is happy and confident.
Freddie often struts around the house with his tail held high when he’s feeling sociable – especially around mealtimes or when greeting us.
🐾 Slow swishing or gentle flicking
This can mean curiosity or mild irritation.
Penny does this when she’s watching birds from the window – focused, alert, but still calm.
🐾 Fast lashing tail
This signals annoyance or overstimulation.
If Freddie’s tail starts lashing during playtime, it’s a clear sign he’s had enough and needs a break.
🐾 Tail tucked under the body
A sign of fear or insecurity. Penny tends to do this in unfamiliar environments, like during vet visits or when new people come over.
What Cat Ears Can Tell You
Cat ears are incredibly expressive and can rotate independently.
👂 Ears facing forward
Your cat is relaxed, curious, or playful.
Both Freddie and Penny show this when exploring new toys.
👂 Ears turned sideways
This often signals uncertainty.
Penny’s ears tilt slightly sideways when she hears an unfamiliar noise – she’s unsure, but still assessing the situation.
👂 Ears flattened back
A strong warning sign.
Freddie does this briefly if he’s startled, letting us know he needs space.
Reading Your Cat’s Eyes
Your cat’s eyes reveal a lot about their emotional state.
😺 Slow blinking
Often called a “cat kiss,” this is a sign of trust and affection.
Penny regularly slow-blinks from across the room – and if you blink slowly back, she usually returns the gesture.
😺 Wide pupils
Large pupils can mean excitement or fear.
Freddie’s pupils go huge during energetic play sessions, especially when chasing feather toys.
😺 Narrow pupils
Typically seen when a cat is calm and relaxed in a well-lit environment.
Body Posture & What It Means
🐈 Relaxed posture
A stretched-out body or belly-up position means your cat feels safe.
Freddie often sprawls out completely when he’s feeling comfortable and content.
🐈 Crouched or tense body
This can indicate fear or uncertainty.
Penny tends to crouch slightly when she’s unsure about something new.
🐈 Arched back with fur puffed up
A defensive response – your cat feels threatened and is trying to look bigger.
Purring, Kneading & Other Signals
💭 Purring
Usually a sign of happiness, but context matters.
Freddie purrs loudly during cuddles, while Penny’s purring is quieter and more selective.
💭 Kneading
A comforting behaviour from kittenhood that shows trust and contentment.
Both Freddie and Penny knead soft blankets – especially when settling down to sleep.
💭 Head bunting or rubbing
Your cat is marking you as theirs.
When Penny rubs her head against your hand, it’s her way of showing affection and claiming you.
Understanding the Full Picture
No single behaviour tells the whole story. Always look at body language as a combination – tail, ears, eyes, and posture together will give you the clearest insight into how your cat is feeling.
Freddie and Penny have taught us that every cat communicates a little differently – and that’s part of the magic.
