Spring has officially arrived – and in our house, that means one thing…
Freddie supervises.
Penny judges. 😼
While we’re opening windows, clearing cupboards and chasing that fresh-start feeling, our cats are busy investigating every box, bag and cleaning cloth in sight.
Spring cleaning is the perfect reset – but it also brings new smells, open doors and hidden hazards for curious paws.
So today, Freddie (professional cling-on) and Penny (independent explorer) are sharing how we cat-proof our home each spring 🌷
🌿 1. Choosing Cat-Safe Cleaning Products (Freddie Learns the Hard Way…)

Freddie’s favourite spring activity?
Following me around while I clean.
Which means he is exactly the reason we switched to pet-safe cleaning products.
Many household cleaners contain chemicals that can be harmful to cats, especially:
- Bleach
- Ammonia
- Strong disinfectants
- Highly concentrated essential oils
Cats walk across freshly cleaned surfaces and then groom themselves – so residue matters.
✨ What we use instead:
- Mild, fragrance-free cleaners
- Pet-safe branded products
- Simple vinegar + water solutions
We always let floors dry completely before Freddie resumes his “inspection duties.”
🌷 2. Spring Flowers & Plants (Penny’s Forbidden Snack List)

Penny LOVES plants.
Not to admire… to chew.
And unfortunately, some popular spring flowers are highly toxic to cats.
🚫 Plants to avoid:
- Lilies (extremely dangerous)
- Tulips
- Daffodils
- Hyacinths
Even a small nibble can cause serious harm.
Instead, we opt for:
✔ Spider plants
✔ Areca palms
✔ Cat grass (Penny approves)
If you’re unsure about a plant – keep it out of paw reach or skip it entirely.
🪟 3. Open Windows = Adventure Mode Activated

The first warm day of spring and Freddie is glued to the windowsill, chirping at birds.
But open windows can be risky.
Cats can:
- Squeeze through small gaps
- Push against loose screens
- Climb unexpectedly
We always:
✔ Use secure window screens
✔ Avoid leaving upper windows wide open
✔ Supervise balcony access
Sunshine is wonderful – but safety comes first.
🧼 4. Decluttering Without the Chaos (Because Everything Is a Toy)

Spring decluttering creates one big problem…
Everything ends up on the floor.
And to Freddie and Penny, that means:
🎉 Treasure Hunt 🎉
The biggest dangers?
- Hair ties
- Elastic bands
- String
- Ribbon
- Craft supplies
These can cause dangerous internal blockages if swallowed.
Now, when we declutter, we:
🧺 Keep small items contained
🧺 Work in sections
🧺 Store things immediately
Freddie once tried to claim a ribbon as his new best friend. It did not end well (for the ribbon).
🐾 5. Refreshing Their Space Too
Spring cleaning isn’t just about human spaces.
It’s also our cue to:
- Wash their beds and blankets
- Deep clean litter trays
- Check scratching posts
- Rotate toys
Penny appreciates a freshly fluffed bed.
Freddie just appreciates being involved.
This is also a lovely time to introduce something new – a fresh toy, enrichment activity, or treat box – to keep things exciting.
A seasonal refresh helps prevent boredom and keeps indoor cats stimulated.
🧡 6. The “Safe Room” Rule
When furniture moves and doors stay open, cats get curious.
Before any big cleaning session, we:
✔ Set up a cosy room
✔ Add water, litter, and blankets
✔ Close doors securely
Freddie prefers to supervise from the doorway.
Penny prefers strategic distance.
Both are safer that way.
🌼 A Clean Home, A Happy Tail
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean stress for you or your cat.
With a little preparation, you can:
✔ Keep curious paws safe
✔ Prevent accidental escapes
✔ Avoid toxic hazards
✔ Make your home feel fresh and calm
At Happy Tails, Freddie and Penny remind us daily that a home should feel safe, comforting and full of love.
Because a truly clean home is one where every whisker feels secure 🐾💕
