😺 International Day of Happiness: How Cats Help Keep Us Happy

Friday 20th March marks International Day of Happiness, a day dedicated to celebrating the things in life that bring us joy, comfort, and wellbeing.

For many of us, happiness comes with whiskers, soft paws, and the gentle sound of purring. Cats have an incredible ability to brighten our days, lift our spirits, and provide emotional comfort when we need it most.

At Happy Tails, we know this first-hand. Freddie and Penny bring daily moments of laughter, comfort, and love, reminding us that happiness can often be found in the simplest of moments.

🧠 Cats Are Wonderful for Our Mental Health

Cats may be small, but their impact on our mental wellbeing can be huge.

Studies have shown that spending time with cats can help:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve mood
  • Decrease feelings of loneliness

Just stroking a cat can release oxytocin, often called the ā€œlove hormone,ā€ which helps us feel calm and connected.

After a long day, sitting down with a cat curled up beside you can feel like a reset button for your mind.

😌 The Comfort of a Cat’s Presence

Cats have a unique way of being present with us. They don’t worry about tomorrow or stress about yesterday, they simply exist in the moment.

When a cat curls up beside you, kneads your blanket, or slowly blinks at you from across the room, it’s a gentle reminder to slow down and enjoy the present.

Those quiet, peaceful moments can make a big difference to our mental wellbeing.

😹 Cats Bring Laughter into Our Lives

If you live with a cat, you’ll know that they are natural entertainers.

One minute they are gracefully perched on the windowsill… the next they are sliding across the floor chasing a toy or dramatically leaping after a piece of string.

Their playful antics bring so much laughter into our homes and laughter is one of the simplest ways to boost happiness.

🐾 Freddie & Penny: Our Daily Dose of Happiness

Here at Happy Tails, Freddie and Penny are the heart of everything we do.

Rescued in summer 2025 and adopted at the end of June, they arrived full of energy, curiosity, and love. Despite everything they had been through before being rescued, they immediately showed their joyful personalities.

Freddie is full of affection and enthusiasm, always ready to demand attention or investigate whatever is happening.

Penny is wonderfully independent, brings calm confidence and a quiet sweetness to every moment.

Together, they remind us every day how powerful the bond between humans and cats can be.

šŸ’› Celebrating the Happiness Cats Bring

On this International Day of Happiness, take a moment to appreciate the cats in your life.

Whether they are curled up beside you, watching birds from the window, or zooming around the house at midnight, they bring joy in their own special ways.

Sometimes happiness isn’t a big event, sometimes it’s simply the gentle sound of a cat purring next to you.

And honestly… we wouldn’t have it any other way.

🐾 From all of us at Happy Tails, and especially Freddie šŸ’™ and Penny šŸ’— we hope your day is filled with happiness, cuddles, and plenty of purrs.
