When Freddie and Penny first came home, we always knew one thing for certain – one day they would have a catio of their own.

As indoor cats, their safety has always been our highest priority. We wanted them to experience everything the outdoors has to offer without the risks that come with free roaming. Watching birds, feeling the summer breeze, smelling the flowers after it rains and listening to the sounds of the garden are all wonderful experiences for curious cats, and we wanted Freddie and Penny to enjoy every one of them in a safe and secure environment.

So, we made them a promise.

By the summer, they would have their very own catio.

After months of planning and excitement, that promise finally became reality.

We were incredibly fortunate to have our bespoke catio built by Cheshire Catios, who created something that was even better than we had imagined. Every part of the design was thoughtfully planned around Freddie and Penny’s safety, comfort and curiosity. The catio features a full weatherproof roof, allowing them to enjoy fresh air whatever the weather decides to do, while the sturdy timber frame, constructed from treated 2×2 timber with strong 16-gauge wire mesh, gives us complete peace of mind that they are secure.

One of our favourite features is the double-locking entrance, creating a safe air-lock system so there is never any risk of an adventurous escape. Above this is a cosy lounging platform where Freddie and Penny can sit and watch the world go by like little kings and queens surveying their kingdom. There are shelves at different heights, a bridge to explore, and even specially built structures covering the drains and pipework, ensuring every inch of the space is both safe and usable.

The first time Freddie and Penny stepped into their new outdoor room, it was as though they had discovered an entirely new world.

Every sound was fascinating.

Every scent was worth investigating.

Every corner deserved a thorough inspection.

For two cats who had only ever looked outside through windows, suddenly having the opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the garden up close was an adventure unlike any other.

Almost immediately, the catio became one of their favourite places to spend their day.

Some mornings they race through the window before we’ve even had chance to open the curtains, eager to see who has visited the garden overnight. Other days they simply stretch out on the shelves or curl up on the top platform, enjoying an afternoon nap while listening to the birds singing nearby. It has quickly become their own little sanctuary.

One of Freddie’s favourite pastimes is keeping a careful watch over the garden. Every bird that lands on the fence receives his full attention, whether it’s a curious robin, a noisy blackbird searching for worms, a pigeon wandering across the lawn or a cheeky magpie stopping by for a look around. Penny is equally fascinated, although she often prefers to observe quietly from one of the higher shelves, taking everything in with those bright green eyes of hers.

Then there are the insects.

Butterflies drift lazily past on warm afternoons, bees buzz from flower to flower, tiny flies dance in the sunshine, and the occasional spider appears to investigate the wooden framework. Freddie, in particular, believes every tiny flying creature has arrived purely to entertain him. He follows them with complete determination, hopping from shelf to shelf in pursuit of his latest tiny adventure, while Penny often watches from a distance, looking as though she’s quietly judging his enthusiastic hunting techniques.

One of the unexpected joys for us has been sharing the garden with them. While we are outside tending to the flower beds, watering the plants or simply enjoying the sunshine, Freddie and Penny are never far away. They sit beside us in their catio, supervising every gardening decision as though they have been appointed official garden inspectors. It means we can all enjoy time outdoors together, even if we’re separated by a secure mesh wall.

Sadly, our excitement was briefly interrupted just five days after the catio was completed when Freddie injured himself. Suddenly, the beautiful new space we’d all been so excited about had to remain empty while he recovered. For two whole weeks, both cats stayed indoors while Freddie healed, and although it was disappointing, his recovery was far more important than any outdoor adventure.

Thankfully, Freddie made a full recovery, and the day they were finally allowed back into the catio felt almost like opening it for the very first time all over again. They explored every shelf, every corner and every bridge with just as much excitement as before, making up for the adventures they’d temporarily missed.

Now that summer has arrived, we’re so happy that the promise we made has become a reality. Freddie and Penny can enjoy long sunny afternoons watching wildlife, feeling the gentle breeze through the mesh and relaxing in complete safety. Watching them explore their outdoor world brings us so much happiness because we know they’re experiencing the very best of both worlds: all the enrichment of nature with none of the dangers of busy roads, getting lost or encountering other animals.

Although we’re making the most of these warm summer days, we’re equally excited to see how the catio changes throughout the seasons. We can’t wait for crisp autumn mornings when colourful leaves begin to fall into the garden, and cosy winter afternoons wrapped in blankets while Freddie and Penny watch the rain tapping gently on the roof or birds visiting the garden feeders. Every season will bring something new for them to discover, and we’re looking forward to experiencing it alongside them.

As special as this catio is, it also carries a little extra meaning in our hearts.

Our beloved Alfie never had the opportunity to have a catio of his own, and that’s something we’ll probably always wish we’d been able to give him. He loved watching the world from the windows, and we often find ourselves imagining how much he would have enjoyed sitting outside safely, listening to the birds and feeling the fresh air around him.

Perhaps that’s one of the reasons this project feels so incredibly special.

It’s a promise kept.

It’s a dream that finally became reality.

Most importantly, it’s a gift that Freddie and Penny will enjoy for many years to come, giving them a safe place to explore, play, relax and satisfy their endless curiosity.

Every time we see two little black cats sitting together on their favourite shelf, watching the birds and soaking up another beautiful day, we’re reminded that some of the happiest moments are also the simplest.

And we know that their greatest adventures in the catio are only just beginning.
